2018 Stuff

8/23/2016

2018 Has been very busy so far.  I have the painting of Pecos River Rocks in the annual Masterworks show as well as five miniature paintings.  I helped out packing bags for the Plein Air Convention in Santa Fe which will enable me to attend some of the presentations.  Met a lot of wonderful people.  The end of April I will participate in the Santa Fe Plein Air Fiesta.  Five days of painting and then a show at the Sorrel Sky Gallery.  Most exciting, I have a one person show hanging in the Margaret & Turner Branch Benefactors Lounge at Popejoy Hall, UNM campus.  The show will hang from April 20 through June 26. Paintings may be viewed during business hours M-F, 9:00-5:00 or by appointment. I am hosting a reception Monday, May 7, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.  Would love to have you come by.  I continue to paint with the Plein Air Friends group and love the regular feedback..

Mostly I have been painting with a group of plein air painters this year and the experience has been both frustrating and exciting.  We go out about once a week to various local sites.  After a couple of hours of effort we line up the paintings and critique each others' work...this is immensely helpful and I think we all have grown.  Sometimes I like my work from the morning and sometimes I don't ...but I always feel it has been worth the effort.  Below is one of my recent attempts.

This is titled "Morning in the Garden of the Gods" and is 11x14.  This area on North 14 between Cerillos and Santa Fe has incredible rock formations.

Here is a list of shows and activities I've participated in this year:
Masterworks Juried show and exhibition, April
Cloud Painting Workshop at the New Mexico Art League, summer June-July
Gallery with A Cause exhibition, Sponsor the New Mexico Cancer Center, June -September
Holy Cross Church "Music and Art for the Soul", May
PAPNM Santa Fe Plein Arts Festival, juried entries, June
New Mexico Art League, "On the Horizon, Landscapes of New Mexico" September -October
Weems Gallery, Size Does Matter Show,  September 17 opening  The home page painting will be in this show.  This is the largest work I've done since I retired.  As a drama teacher I was used to painting large for the sets of our productions.

painting the ballet efforts

5/16/2014

This last year, I had the opportunity to paint some ballet dancers through a project called Paint the Ballet, which is a cooperative effort between about 35 artists and members of the New Mexico Ballet Company.

This is a 9x12 painting I did of one of the dancers, Jaclyn.  I found it particularly difficult to work on the facial likeness on such a small scale while still trying to keep the brush work fresh and lively.  I loved working with color tints in the tutu.  I started this during a live modeling session, but worked on it for quite some time back home in my studio.  I'm looking forward to continuing with this project and expanding beyond landscapes as my subject matter.
